Grgich Hills Estate Story:
On Independence Day, 1977, Mike Grgich sat down with Austin Hills and his sister, Mary Lee Strebl, from the Hills Bros Coffee family, and the Grgich Hills winery was founded.
Today, GrgichHills Estate remains committed to making distinctive wines of elegance, consistency & longevity.  Their pride & joy is their Chardonnay.  Not surprising, since Mike Grgich was the winemaker at Chateau Montelena in 1973, whose Chardonnay won first place in the famous Paris tasting in 1976.
We don't have nobility in America, but if Napa Valley had a Mt. Rushmore, Mike Grgich would be on it!  All you have to do is look at his accomplishments. As winemaker at Chateau Montelena, his 1973 Chardonnay took 1st Place in a blind tasting against the finest French White Burgundy, in the famous Paris tasting of 1976, earning him the reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world.  A bottle of his 1973 Chardonnay, along with Mike's signature blue beret and the suitcase he brought with him from Croatia are in the Smithsonian Institute.  If that's not enough, he was also inducted in the Vintners Hall of Fame.
We are very proud to have Mike's daughter, Violet Grgich as our guest speaker, who will guide us through their impressive line-up of wines. Violet grew up in the business, is a graduate of UC, Davis and is now responsible for the daily management of the winery, as well as sales & marketing.
